Richard Maeda

Richard Kiyoshi Maeda, 88, of Kailua-Kona, died Jan. 17, 2022 at his residence. Born Aug. 9, 1933, in Honolulu, he was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran and retired teacher of the former Kalaoa elementary and Konawaena elementary Schools.

He is survived by wife, Janet Maeda of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Dawn (Kenneth) Broderick of Rockville, Maryland, and Yuri (Dennis) Toyama of Honolulu; brother, Calvin (Donna) Maeda; sister, Lillian (Leroy) Uyeda, all of Honolulu; four grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Patrick Pastor

Patrick “Pat” Duane Kealoha Kamakau Pastor, 77, of Kailua-Kona, died Sept. 20, 2021 at The Queen’s Medical Center. Born Sept. 5, 1944, in Wailuku, Maui, he was a supervisor for Minit Stop retail stores, amp worker and security officer for Aloha Airlines and bus driver for Hilo Hattie’s, past commander of the VFW, Kona Chapter, lifetime member of the Kona Elk’s Club, American Legion Post 20 and a U.S. Army veteran.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Feb. 11 at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua-Kona for a celebration of life. Luncheon will follow at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kailua-Kona.

He is survived by wife, Gloria Pastor of Kailua-Kona; daughters, Rebecca (Peter) Piilani of Anchorage, Alaska, Melissa (Roy) Antonio of Kailua-Kona, and Karen Lee Pastor of Honolulu; stepsons, Kyle (Maria) Keomalu of Las Vegas, and Keith (Linda) Keomalu of Honolulu; stepdaughters, Karen (Rynold) Ishida and Leina (Steve) Keomalu-Cabanas, all of Honolulu; sisters, Shirley (John) Eddy, Gail (Jeffrey) Goo, Kathleen Kiili, and Loretta (Jim Austin) Branlund, all of Wailuku, Maui; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous niece, nephews and cousins.

Masayuki Kiyojima

Masayuki “Buddy” Kiyojima, 88, of Hilo, died Jan. 2 at the Hilo Medical Center. He was born in Hilo and was a construction laborer with the Local 368 Construction Laborer’s Union, working with numerous construction companies.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Jan. 30 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for an 11 a.m. service; committal service at noon at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 Pavilion. Casual attire; no flowers.

He is survived by wife, Leiko Kiyojima of Hilo; son, Keith Kiyojima of Hilo; daughter, Cindy Kiyojima of California; brothers, Thomas (Susan) Kiyojima of Hilo and Lloyd (Zelda) Kiyojima of Keaau; sisters, Chiyono Kinoshita of Honolulu, Sumie Adams of Wisconsin, Amy Shimabukuro of Los Angeles and Lois (Clyde) Silva of Keaau; five grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Stanley Sumiki

Stanley Hideo Sumiki, 82, of Kapehu Village, died Jan. 18, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Laupahoehoe, he was a retired groundskeeper for Parker Ranch and a member of the Wainaku Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

George Curtis

George Darwin Curtis, 93, of Honomu, died Jan. 16, 2022, at his residence. He was an affiliate professor of marine sciences at UH, served as science advisor to the Pacific Tsunami Museum, president of the Tsunami Society, squadron commander (CAP), American Red Cross board of directors, president of the UH Chapter Sigma XI and senior chairman at Hawaii Section Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Friends may call at 11 a.m. Jan. 28 at Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles in Hilo for a service.

He is survived by wife, Sandra Curtis; sons, Ted (Nan) Curtis and Paul Curtis; daughters, Carol (Sid) Curtis Buckingham and Ann (Jim) Curtis Moore; brother, Lawrence Curtis; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
